LASIK Complications
LASIK complications can be minor and short term, or as serious
as permanent blindness. A number of LASIK complications appearing
immediately after surgery resolve themselves within a few days or
months. Other LASIK complications may require corrective surgery or
treatment, or may result in permanent damage. LASIK complications
that threaten vision occur in less than 1% of patients, while more
minor LASIK complications may occur in up to 5% of patients.
Some common LASIK complications include dry eyes, decreased night vision,
under or over correction, and regression. The most common LASIK complications
are dry eyes and decreased night vision. Patients with dry eyes as the
result of LASIK complications are usually able to have the problem remedied
through treatment. LASIK complications involving decreased night vision
can also cause the patient see glare, halos, and starbursts. These LASIK
complications usually subside in one week to six months, but may require
treatment and some LASIK complications affecting vision cannot be remedied,
although these cases are rare. Under and overcorrection resulting from
LASIK complications often require follow up surgery to ensure optimal
vision. Patients with LASIK complications requiring surgery generally
must wait three to six months so that further LASIK complications do
not ensue.
Severe LASIK complications are extremely rare and include vision loss
that cannot be corrected. Patients should review LASIK complications
with their physicians and be advised that some LASIK complications can
result in terminal vision loss.
