Vision Correction with LASIK
(continued)
LASIK vision correction uses a laser beam or series of laser
beams to adjust the patient’s eye shape. LASIK vision correction
is intended to permanently correct vision without the use of contact
lenses or glasses.
Before LASIK vision correction surgery, the doctor will measure the
patient’s eyes to determine the amount of LASIK vision correction
necessary for optimal results. During the surgery, the doctor is able
to control the specific LASIK vision correction levels through a computer
that determines the amount and duration of laser use. Different LASIK
vision correction styles allow for a variety of problems to be corrected.
The major factor in LASIK vision correction is the amount of tissue
removed from the cornea, because the way in which LASIK vision correction
functions is the reshaping of the corneal tissue. For example, nearsighted
patients will receive LASIK vision correction designed to flatten their
cornea. While all doctors research patient needs prior to performing
LASIK vision correction, the level of eye mapping can vary greatly.
The more recent technological developments in LASIK vision correction
have led to the use of waves reflected from the back of the eye, allowing
LASIK vision correction with a degree of accuracy unmatched by other
methods. During the actual surgery for LASIK vision correction, patients
will usually be asked to look at a light. This light aids in LASIK vision
correction by helping the patient focus on one spot, reducing errors
due to pupil movement. (Recent LASIK vision correction lasers occasionally
including a tracking device that allows the laser to follow a moving
eye.)
LASIK vision correction provides an opportunity for patients to experience
optimal vision without contact lenses or glasses. While LASIK vision
correction carries some risks, they are usually minimal. If you would
