Astigmatism Correction with LASIK
Astigmatism LASIK treatments correct the shape of the eye to provide
improved vision for patients with astigmatism. Astigmatism LASIK uses
a laser to re-shape the cornea by removing small amounts of tissue.
Choosing astigmatism LASIK procedure often provides the optimal amount
of correction for patients; in most cases, patients undergoing the astigmatism
LASIK treatment have better results than those using contact lenses
or glasses. In treatments other than astigmatism LASIK, the main problem
is that the misshapen cornea (astigmatism) is not directly addressed,
while using astigmatism LASIK allows the doctor to precisely reshape
the cornea to the proper dimensions. Prior to performing astigmatism
LASIK, the doctor creates a corneal map for the patient. This map guides
the laser during astigmatism LASIK, using measurements of each eye,
including prescription requirements, and eye shape and depth. Following
an astigmatism LASIK treatment, frequent eye exams will help the doctor
determine the actual success of the astigmatism LASIK procedure in treating
the astigmatism. In some cases, patients will require additional astigmatism
LASIK treatments to achieve the best possible results, and not every
individual will fully correct using astigmatism LASIK.
