Vision Enhancement through LASIK

LASIK enhancement takes place following a LASIK procedure and is designed to “fine-tune” the patient’s vision. Occasionally LASIK enhancement is provided at no additional cost as part of the original LASIK surgery price. LASIK enhancement is rarely required, with most patients content with the outcome of the original procedure.

If LASIK enhancement is desired, the patient and doctor will consult to determine if the conditions favor performing a LASIK enhancement, with the understanding that the enhancement may or may not actually “take”. Problems LASIK enhancement addresses include astigmatism, where the misshapen eye may require additional correction to optimize vision. Usually LASIK enhancement takes place at least three months after the original LASIK surgery, allowing vision to stabilize. LASIK enhancement also requires that the patient have adequate corneal tissue to perform the surgery. To perform LASIK enhancement surgery, the surgeon either lifts the original corneal flap, or creates a new one. A LASIK enhancement surgery is almost identical to the original surgery, and patients who undergo a LASIK enhancement face all the same risks as patients in regular LASIK surgery.

Patients who feel LASIK enhancement would be beneficial to them should consult a LASIK physician to learn more about LASIK enhancement and its implications. Ideally, a patient will already have an understanding of LASIK enhancement from their initial meetings with the physician, prior to the original LASIK treatment.
