LASIK Side Effects
LASIK side effects can range in severity and permanence from
mild to debilitating. Generally speaking, the more serious
LASIK side effects carry a lower chance of occurrence, but some patients
may be at increased risk for LASIK side effects, due to pre-existing
health problems or other factors.
The more common (and generally temporary) LASIK side effects include
dry eyes, ghost images and haloes, and decreased night vision. Patients
who experience these LASIK side effects usually report that they clear
up on their own within a few weeks. Occasionally, the LASIK side effects
will last longer, and in some cases, patients require additional treatment
for lingering LASIK side effects, such as eye drops for prolonged dryness,
or glasses to improve night vision. More serious LASIK side effects,
such as infections, displaced corneal flaps, and overcorrection, usually
comprise the category of LASIK side effects that are easier to prevent
than correct. There are a variety of methods for preventing specific
LASIK side effects, and your LASIK doctor should discuss them with you
prior to surgery. Many serious LASIK side effects can be corrected with
additional LASIK treatments, although a small number are permanent.
Overall, serious LASIK side effects are very rare, and a good LASIK
doctor will minimize the chances for LASIK side effects even further.
