New Study Compares Lasik and Lasek
January 3 , 2007
Patients who opt for Lasek (for explanation read on) are just as likely to get good results and be as safe as patients who choose Lasik surgery instead, a new study finds.
The study, conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Dimitri Azar, M.D. and his colleagues compared the results of Lasek procedures on 122 eyes to those of 122 eyes treated by Lasik.
The study findings were published in December’s issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
The Similarities and Differences
“Both procedures seem safe, effective, and predictable,” Azar said in a news release.
Both procedures employ lasers to cut flaps in the cornea’s surface to correct its shape. The difference is that Lasek (laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy) makes shallower cuts that do not penetrate too deeply into the corneal surface.
This reduces the probability of problems arising from the flaps, which is a concern with Lasik (laser in situ keratomileusis) procedures.
Lasek recovery time is longer however, and the recovery may be more painful.
Which is better?
“We found that although there were some differences … that favor the Lasek procedure, the differences were not clinically significant,” Azar says.
Some doctors say Lasik is better, while others swear Lasek is superior.
