New LASIK development could make vision correction surgery even safer

LASIK laser vision correction has successfully eliminated the nuisance and need for eyeglasses and contacts in qualified patients. When performed in appropriate patients by qualified surgeons, LASIK is a great option.

A patent was issued to an Illinois LASIK surgeon that could correct off-center laser ablations from the surgery, should they occur. During LASIK, the surgeon asks the patient to look at a fixation light and a digital image of the patient's eye is created at the beginning of the treatment so that the laser can track eye movements and adjust the laser treatment accordingly.

If the patient looks slightly off the fixation target or if the doctor did not correctly center the laser treatment at the time of the digital image, the patient's vision will be a little less than perfect. In some instances, the potential visual loss can be significant, but the new patent will allow a solution to any problems by incorporating the correction of off-center laser ablations into the newer LASIK machines.
