New Procedure to Complement LASIK

A new surgical procedure involving an implantable lens is now available as an alternative for patients with moderate to severe nearsightedness who might not be candidates for LASIK

Known as the Visian ICL (implantable collamer lens), it represents "the biggest advance since LASIK" - according to Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler who performs both procedures in his Beverley Hills office.

The implantable lens surgery is like LASIK in that they both take about 40 minutes per person to complete, are performed while the patient is awake, and are done in an outpatient setting.

However, instead of creating a flap from the outer layer of the eye, as is the case with LASIK, the foldable ICL is inserted behind the iris through a tiny incision and placed over the eye's natural lens.

Once properly positioned, the lens works much like a traditional contact lens but from inside the eye. Benefits of ICL include sharper vision and fast recovery time as well as less risk of side effects such as dry eye, glare, and light halos.
