More patients qualify for LASIK
November 23, 2004
The benefits of LASIK eye surgery are tremendous, but until recently there were certain groups of patients that did not qualify for the corrective laser surgery. Now, technology is changing and new advances have allowed many more people to have the option of undergoing corrective surgery.
In the past, wavefront technology, though a more accurate type of LASIK procedure, had its limits as well. Especially among patients with lots of astigmatism or needing a high degree of correction, new advancements qualify a larger group of patients for cornea corrections.
LASIK doctors can now treat patients who have larger refractive errors. By using a corneal mapping software that is the most critical part of advanced wavefront, the LASIK patient's eye is measured and the ability to correct over 8 diopters of near sightedness and close to 4 diopters of stigmatism is possible.
A new intralase technology uses tiny gas bubbles to cut a much thinner flap in the cornea, and the combination of advanced technology creates the new advanced wavefront procedure. The new surgical methods allow the doctor to have more control and accuracy during the LASIK procedure while more patients enjoy safe corrective surgery. The technology has also reduced the risk of glare and nighttime haloes, a common side effect of earlier LASIK procedures.
