WaveLight custom results
December 20, 2005
In October 2005, researchers submitted clinical trial data to the FDA regarding the Allegretto Wave custom-guided system for use in LASIK procedures. Investigators also discussed their three- and six-month clinical data at a meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to presenting this data, researchers compared findings to the wave-front optimized system, which is currently approved by the FDA for use in LASIK procedures.
Wavefront optimized procedures use pre-determined beam profiles, which were created with optimal wavefronts in mind, instead of a patient's unique wavefront profile. The Allegretto Wave custom-guided system uses the patient's individual wavefront profile when conducting a LASIK procedure.
The three-month analysis of the custom Wave procedure and the approved LASIK technique show very similar results. Researchers gathered this information by comparing 174 wavefront-optimized eyes with 174 wave-front guided eyes. After three months of surgery, approximately 95 percent of those in each group had vision of 20/20 or better. When the data was further analyzed, researchers found that certain patients benefited more from the customized LASIK wavefront treatment. Patients with higher aberrations of 0.3 um or more benefited more from the custom technique.
The makers of the Allegretto Wave custom-guided system hopes the FDA will review this data and reach a decision about this new LASIK technology by the middle of next year.
Both wavefront systems are developed by German pioneer WaveLight Laser Technologie AG. These systems bring new capabilities to the LASIK surgeon, allowing for fast, precise, and custom vision correction. These systems also provide the ability to correct higher order aberrations.
