Eye Allergies
Allergies are caused by eye's over reaction to a substance that it
deems harmful. Most eye allergies come from airborne substances, such
as pollen, mold, dust and pet dander. Through tears, the eye will try
to flush out the allergen, even though it may not actually have the
potential to do any harm.
More than 22 million Americans suffer from allergies. Many of these
also suffer from allergic reactions in the eye, such as conjunctivitis
or pink eye, which produces red, swollen, tearing or itchy eyes. Allergies
can also lead to contact lens discomfort; allergens can stimulate overproduction
of natural substances in the eyes, which bind to the contact lenses
and make wearing them uncomfortable.
The most obvious treatment for eye allergies is avoidance. Awareness
of the cause of the allergies is the key to avoiding it. Medications,
such as antihistamines and decongestants, are helpful in relieving many
symptoms caused by allergies, including itchy, watery eyes and redness.
Allergies that interfere with contact lens wear can be relieved by special
contact lens eye drops, which keep the lenses clear and free of allergens.
