Amblyopia Treatment
Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a condition that occurs when
undeveloped central vision - usually in one eye - causes the brain to
ignore the images from that eye and see only out of the developed eye.
Left untreated, amblyopia can cause permanent vision damage.
Usually diagnosed in children under six, the condition can usually
be remedied through various amblyopia treatments. Although it will not
go away on its own, with proper treatment, amblyopia can be totally
reversed.
Examples of amblyopia treatments include: vision therapy, which usually
involves wearing an eye patch over the good eye to force the brain to
focus on the vision from the amblyopic eye, thus strengthening it; atropine
eye drops (used in place of the eye patch), which temporarily weaken
vision in the good eye, forcing use of the amblyopic eye; or corrective
lenses to fix a strong refractive problem that may be the root of the
amblyopia. Surgery may be used as an amblyopia treatment if the condition
is the result of strabismus, a disease caused by underdeveloped eye
muscles.
