Astigmatism and LASIK

Astigmatism, the most common vision problem, which usually accompanies nearsightedness or farsightedness, is the result of an irregularly shaped cornea. It is characterized by blurry or distorted vision, headaches and eyestrain.

Treatments for astigmatism may involve eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. The prescription of astigmatism includes three parts instead of just one. These include a main spherical correction (as in a regular prescription) and two parts that describe the extent and location of the astigmatism. In past year, astigmatism patients usually could only wear rigid contact lenses. Recently, however, new soft lens designs, called toric lenses, can also be fitted with astigmatism prescriptions. These lenses have a special correction built into them.

The FDA approved the use of LASIK surgery to treat astigmatism in 1997. The only treatment that remedies the underlying cause of astigmatism, LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea so it can focus light rays better.
