Astigmatism Test
Astigmatism is the most common vision problem, caused by an irregularly
shaped cornea. Usually treated with eyeglasses or contact lenses, astigmatism
causes symptoms that range from unnoticeable to slightly blurred vision
to headaches, eyestrain and totally distorted vision.
There are four tests used to diagnose astigmatism. The first, the vision
test, is the simplest, yet most important determining factor. This is
the common test when the patient is asked to read letters of a chart
20 feet away. People with 20/20 vision will be able to see exactly what
should be seen from 20 feet away.
The second astigmatism test, the refraction test, uses a lens machine
placed in front of the patient to determine which lenses help see the
chart better. The third astigmatism test, the keratometry test, measures
the curvature of the cornea. Since astigmatism is caused by an irregularly
shaped cornea, this test is important in determining the cornea's shape
and power. The final astigmatism test, the corneal topography test,
allows the doctor to see a three-dimensional map of the cornea, allowing
for precise treatment, whether through contact lens fitting or refractive
surgery.
