Therefore, macular degeneration prevention can include quitting smoking and maintaining a healthy weight.

For prevention of macular degeneration, doctors also recommend eating a healthy diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fish. Recent studies have shown that a mixture of various antioxidants may reduce the risk of advanced macular degeneration in patients with onset symptoms, however the high levels of vitamins are not recommended as a preventive method.

Macular degeneration prevention may also include protecting yourself against UVA and UVB rays through sunglass wear, as well as maintaining a normal blood pressure through diet, exercise and attentiveness to medical doctor's visits. Vigilance with eye doctor visits can also help detect macular degeneration at an early stage, which may lead to prevention of the disease in the advanced stage.
