Macular Degeneration Symptoms
Macular degeneration is an age-related disease that affects the macula,
the center part of the retina that aids in central vision. The progressive
condition is the leading cause of vision loss in Americans over age
60.
In some cases, macular degeneration comes on so slowly that people
don't notice a change in their vision. In other cases, however, the
damage to the macula may be so severe that total vision loss occurs.
Macular degeneration symptoms usually do not appear before age 55.
Early macular degeneration symptoms include fuzzy vision, shadowy or
blurred areas in central vision, straight lines that appear wavy and
the need for more light to do close tasks. Once the disease progresses,
advance macular degeneration symptoms appear, including a larger, darker
blurred spot in central vision and increasing difficulty in reading
or recognizing faces until they are very close in proximity.
