Retinitis Pigmentosa
Retinitis pigmentosa is the name for a group of inherited visual disorders
that causes progressive degeneration of the retina, eventually resulting
in blindness. People with retinitis pigmentosa usually begin losing
peripheral (side) vision, and night vision, which is always poor, gets
progressively worse until it is completely lost. Central vision is preserved
until the very end, when it becomes totally deteriorated.
Retinitis pigmentosa is often discovered in early childhood. The cause
of the disease is unknown, however a genetic link is certain. If neither
parent is afflicted with retinitis pigmentosa, one of them must be a
carrier.
Some forms of retinitis pigmentosa have also been associated with deafness,
kidney disease, central nervous system and metabolic disorders, and
chromosomal abnormalities. There is no cure or treatment for retinitis
pigmentosa.
